Kevin Smuck’s innovative ideas were instrumental in the installation of the curtain wall framing at the front entrance and the above skylight at the Columbus Police Academy. Smuck and his crew of six worked and overcame extreme weather conditions, including snow, rain and ice, to complete the project on time. A lack of details from the contract documents and a tight schedule created a challenge for Smuck. Despite the complexity of the radius arch in front and the many different angles of the roof, Smuck was able to assemble these frames in a quality manner. The sloped curtain wall frame has a radius head and mitred angle midway through the horizontal plane of the wall, stepping over a canopy. The 66-foot by 40-foot wall consists of 196 prefabricated panels and the head of the elevation of the radius tied into the alcove ceiling inside and out. The 48-foot by 20-foot skylight consisted of 90 glass panels and leaned in at an 11-degree angle. Smuck has been with Hilliard Glass & Service for the past eight of his 20 years in the industry.
