Doug Walker played a vital part in the layout and installation of the exposed spiral ductwork at the DSW Corporate Office in Columbus. The complex work included placing 26 rooftop units with exposed sheet metal drops transitioning to 20 feet of double wall spiral pipe. More than 5,500 feet of single wall spiral ductwork running long lengths was installed over and around existing walls, ceiling grid work and office system partitions. Walker led a crew of seven and was involved in all aspects of the project. The installation of the double wall spiral pipe was difficult, with some pieces weighing in at over 400 pounds. Although the materials were prefabricated; more than 1,000 pieces of large diameter single wall and double wall pipe and fittings were required, with many cut to fit onsite. Since the ductwork is exposed, extra care had to be taken to keep every piece free from dents and scratches. Completing the job while working among multiple trades and a short schedule added to Walker’s challenge. Installation was done from scissors lifts, snorkel lifts and ladders, all while maintaining safety at its highest level. Walker has been in the industry for 25 years, spending the past eight at Custom Air Conditioning and Heating Co. Architect: Ford
& Associates Architects Walker is a first-time Craftsmanship Award winner. Originally from North Carolina, he began his career in the industry by assisting a friend with a spiral ductwork job. | Back to Craftsmanship Main Page | | BX Home Page | Updated 10/26/2007 |
