2008 BX Craftsmanship
Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Dave Fetters of Royal Electric Construction Corp.
His Winning Work:  Electrical Installation at the Time Warner Data Center

Since 1964, the BX Craftsmanship Awards Program has recognized the importance of craftspeople for the quality work they provide to the construction industry.

Dave Fetters led a crew of 11 to install the complex electrical system at the Time Warner Data Center .

The project included the installation of two 1820-kilowatt generators, two transformers and multiple power distribution units and UPS systems. Approximately 16,000 feet of underground conduit was laid and 70,000 feet of feeder cable was pulled inside it.

Working on the site of a former landfill, Fetters created a detailed layout to ensure the stability of the underground conduit. The PVC conduit was routed around concrete pylons and suspended in a trapeze format. This rare type of support was required in case of ground settling which could cause major electrical damage.

Fetters worked extensively with other trades, developing solutions to accommodate complex routing obstructions and tight spaces. The data center’s raised floor left just 24 inches of space to place all components.

Fetters has been in the construction industry for 23 years, spending the past 15 in the electrical trade employed by Royal Electric Construction Corp. He is a member of Electrical Workers Local Union 683.

A first-time Craftsmanship Award recipient, Fetters is currently a member of The Rising Leaders Institute Class of 2008, an intensive program created by the BX to help prepare future industry leaders.
