Since
1964, the BX Craftsmanship Awards Program has recognized the importance of
craftspeople for the quality work they provide to the construction industry.
The artistic talent of John Pollock is evident in a unique piece of modern art on display in the lobby at 101 E. Town St.
The three dimensional project which was created from birch and poplar wood pieces features numerous geometrical shapes. Various contoured angles were hand sanded to create illusions and asymmetrical imagery.
Pollock and his crew of three had neither a model nor a set of plans to guide their work, just the 9-foot long by 6-foot high dimensions for the finished project. Pollock started by drawing a rough sketch; then allowed his creativity to finalize the abstract work.
Each piece of the design was uniquely hand crafted off-site and then moved to its permanent location once it was complete. In addition to the unique shapes used in the display, Pollock also used a variety of paint and different applications, adding texture to the finished product.
Pollock has been in the construction industry for 24 years and has been employed by Construction One, Inc. for the past 14 years.
A native of Queens, New York, Pollock moved to Ohio after serving four years in the United States Marines. A carpenter by trade, Pollock is also an artist who spends his free time oil painting. He is a first-time Craftsmanship Award winner.
