The
Craftsman: Don Hemry, Jr. of Mock Woodworking Co. |
|
The architectural woodwork throughout the newly renovated Thompson Library on The Ohio State University campus showcases the talent of Don Hemry, Jr. and his 20 crew members.
The library is a signature building for the university and the woodwork is a major element throughout the space. The solid wood and veneers used on the project were all custom cut from the same Ohio white oak trees to allow for exact matching.
Hemry spent much of his time on the components for the Grand Reference Room. Using historical photographs he was able to reproduce pieces that match the traditional woodwork in the room.
The
renovation also features wood paneling that flows from the historic east side of
the building to the contemporary addition on the west.
The wood pieces for all aspects of the project were fabricated in the shop and installed on site.
Hemry has been employed by Mock Woodworking Co. for more than 25 of his 31 years in the industry.
Hemry is a first-time Craftsmanship Award Winner. He was recognized in 1996 as a member of a winning crew that performed restoration work at the Ohio State House.
