The electrical power distribution and systems in the Central Energy Plant at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is the work of Chad Blanton.
Massive in both scope and complexity, the project consisted of: three 15KV and 1,200 amp services; four 15KV and 3 mega watt generators; more than 50 large pieces of major electrical equipment; approximately 30 standard pieces of typical electrical panels and transformers; plus more than 80 motor drives.
Weighing more than 50,000 pounds each, the generators created one of the greatest challenges for Blanton and his 52 crew members. While the structure was prepared to house them in their permanent locations, a rail system of supplemental steel was needed to move them into place once they were crane lifted to the second floor.
Blanton
worked closely with the mechanical contractor to coordinate the details of their
simultaneous installations.
A member of Electrical Workers Local Union 683, Blanton has been in the construction industry for 17 years. He has been with The Superior Group since 1999.
A first-time Craftsmanship Award recipient, Blanton was also involved with the utility tunnel project at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The tunnel connects the Central Energy Plant with the new, 12-story main hospital that is scheduled to open in 2012.
This year, the Builders Exchange will honor 12 Craftsmanship Award recipients at the BX Annual Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010 at the Aladdin Shrine Center, 3850 Stelzer Rd.
