2010 BX Craftsmanship
Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Andy Huff of Miles-McClellan Construction Co., Inc.
His Winning Work:  Installation of interior and exterior brick and stone veneers at Grandview Yard

The masonry talent of Andy Huff is showcased in the interior and exterior brick and stone veneers of a three-story office building at Grandview Yard.

The 92,000-square-foot structure features extensive brick detail that includes Flemish bond columns, archways and corbels. The design also incorporates stone banding and coping.

The detailed layout of multiple corbels in the columns demanded close attention to ensure the finished look would meet the owner’s expectations.

Approximately 120,000 bricks were utilized, with many of the brick details field cut and engineered on site. Each section of stone in the top band weighs 650 lbs and was hand set by the craftsman.

Huff and his crew of 13 worked through the winter months, requiring weather protection on a project that was already limited in the space available for scaffolding.

Huff started learning about masonry when he was 13 years old, and has been in the commercial trade for more than 16 years. Both Huff and his brother Jason are employed by Miles-McClellan Construction Co., Inc.

Huff is receiving back-to-back Craftsmanship Awards. He was recognized last year for the restored bell tower at St. John the Baptist Italian Catholic Church.

This year, the Builders Exchange will honor 12 Craftsmanship Award recipients at the BX Annual Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at the Aladdin Shrine Center, 3850 Stelzer Rd.
