2010 BX Craftsmanship
Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Pat Kennedy of Karst & Sons Masonry, Inc.
His Winning Work:  Block, brick and stone masonry on the front façade and the steeples at the entrance of The Catholic Foundation

The skill and experience of Pat Kennedy are evident in the block, brick and stone masonry work at The Catholic Foundation.

Kennedy and a crew of nine transformed a vacant building into a striking facility that serves as the new headquarters for the organization.

The project was a combination of structural block support and a brick and stone veneer system that matches the gothic architecture of St. Joseph Cathedral across the street.

Updating an older structure - it was the first Wendy’s restaurant ever built - presented Kennedy with the challenge of maintaining uniformity while utilizing the existing windows and openings.

The arches and radial windows required precise dimensions, so all pieces of stone were hand-hewed on site to ensure the exterior surface would maintain a uniform texture.

The buttress at the front entry required multiple plumb and level points to confirm proper widths and heights that would achieve the architectural design.

Kennedy has been a mason for 33 years and has been employed by Karst & Sons Masonry, Inc. for more than 20 years.

This is Kennedy’s first Craftsmanship Award. He has also completed masonry work on the front entry at Bishop Watterson High School and the addition to Greensview Elementary School in Upper Arlington.

This year, the Builders Exchange will honor 12 Craftsmanship Award recipients at the BX Annual Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at the Aladdin Shrine Center, 3850 Stelzer Rd.
