2010 BX Craftsmanship
Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Jeff “Wally” Kildow of Runyon Erectors
His Winning Work:  Structural steel in a five-story cantilever at the SAS Building on The Ohio State University campus

The structural steel that supports the new Student Academic Services (SAS) Building at The Ohio State University is the work of craftsman Jeff Kildow.

Included in the project is a five-story cantilever that extends nearly 44 feet from the front entry on the corner of Lane Avenue and Tuttle Park Place.

With a crew of 14, Kildow was responsible for the detailed welding of the steel straps that support each deck. The straps, which extend from the end of the cantilever to the full height of the building, were reworked in some locations to ensure the decks would level out when loaded.

It was vital that dimensions were spot-on, allowing approximately three inches of deflection, so the exterior wall would be plumb at the cantilever and adjacent walls.

Kildow has been a member of Ironworkers Local Union 172 for 17 years. He has worked for Runyon Erectors for nearly half of his time in the trade.

A first-time Craftsmanship Award winner, Kildow has always been interested in structural ironwork. His brother Scott is also in the industry and worked with him on this award winning project.

This year, the Builders Exchange will honor 12 Craftsmanship Award recipients at the BX Annual Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at the Aladdin Shrine Center, 3850 Stelzer Rd.
