2010 BX Craftsmanship
Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Shawn Sturgeon of Bruner Corp.
His Winning Work:  Mechanical installation at Nationwide Children’s Hospital Central Energy Plant

Craftsman Shawn Sturgeon used his extensive knowledge of the mechanical trade to execute the installation of piping and systems in the Central Energy Plant at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

The 50,000-square-foot facility includes three boilers and three chillers that will supply heat and cooling to the existing hospital campus, as well as the new hospital tower.

Sturgeon led a crew of 16 to install highly complex and detailed piping systems that includes 24- and 36-inch pipe throughout the building. The size of the piping required some of the chilled water pipes to be fabricated on-site.

With many large pieces of equipment housed in the CEP, coordination with the other trades on this project was vital. Sturgeon spent countless hours reviewing computer-generated models in order to achieve a flawless installation of the many layers of piping on each floor.

A member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 189, Sturgeon has been in the trade for 11 years. He has been employed by Bruner Corp. for the past four years.

A first-time Craftsmanship Award winner, Sturgeon is a third-generation pipefitter and has an older brother in the trade as well. He also worked on the Thompson Library at The Ohio State University.

This year, the Builders Exchange will honor 12 Craftsmanship Award recipients at the BX Annual Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at the Aladdin Shrine Center, 3850 Stelzer Rd.
